Mental health has gained a lot of awareness over recent years as it’s become a growing
concern, especially amongst young people. It’s as serious as physical health and we’re all
prone to be affected by it. Those that have studied it compare it to a spectrum. On some
days, those suffering with it may be able to go about their day as normal while on others, it
may be so debilitating that it stops them getting out of bed. If you would like guidance and
advice on how to help your child manage theirs, we have some tips from a group of school
mentors below.

Being mindful
While bad behaviour and that which is out of character needs to be addressed, it’s also
important to be mindful and speak to your child to understand it better. There may be
something that they’re dealing with which has affected their mental health and by having
open conversations, you tackle the problems at their root.
Find What Make Them Happy
Self-care is really important as it can help us to relax, calm ourselves down and maintain
good mental health. This is different for everybody and below are a few examples of physical
self-care that you can explore together.
Exercise
Walking
Practicing good hygiene
Treating yourself to indulgent foods or a cup of tea
Soaking up sunlight
Taking a shower or bath
Set A Good Example
Remembering to practise self-care can remind your child to do the same and make their
mental health a priority.
Talk
Talking is a great way to deal with your mental health which is why counselling and talking
therapies are often recommended. This can help your child to feel a sense of relief, reflect
on their problems having spoken about them out loud and give you the chance to help.
