Make Lists

Lists will always be your friend when it comes to moving house. If you write everything down then you won’t miss anything along the way. The things to write down include everything you will need to pack and take with you to your new place. You might also like to write down all the chores around the house that need to be done. Making a checklist will give you something to aim for when you are in the process of moving.

Find An Estate Agent

Something else to get out of the way early on is finding the right estate agent to help sell your property. You could use the same estate agent to find you a property to move to. It can be incredibly hard trying to sell your property and find a new one to live in. It takes a lot of planning and organisation for this to go smoothly. In order to find the best estate agent for the job, take a look at online reviews from previous customers and clients. Alternatively, if you know neighbours or friends that have moved you could ask them who they can recommend.

Declutter

Before you move out there is one messy job that everyone has to do, and that is to declutter your home. This is essential if you are downsizing, but not so much if you are moving to a similar-sized property. If you don’t want to take everything with you to your new place then decluttering is the best way to get everything sorted and organised. If you are having people come to look around your property, it is best to keep this as clear as possible. People are not coming to see your belongings scattered about and filling all available space. If people walk into a cluttered house then they are less likely to put down an offer to buy.

The best way to declutter is to go through each room and sort your belongings into four piles. These should consist of the items you want to keep, throw away, donate, and sell. It is always a nice idea to donate your unwanted items to those in need or to those less fortunate than yourselves. You could also look for dumpster rental in your area and use that for items that you cannot donate.

Deep Clean

Something else that nobody particularly wants to do when they move out is deep-clean the property. You will need to do this in order to make it look appealing when you list your home for sale. You will notice when shopping around for your new place that they are also clean and tidy when you look around. If potential buyers come to look around your home and are met with dirt, grime, and debris then they will be less willing to part with their cash. It is best to take each room one step at a time. Doing little bits here and there will make it seem less arduous, you can tick each room off as you go along. The tools you use are important so you get the job done quickly and efficiently. To clean the floors and any stairs you have, you could use a Henry or Dyson

If you don’t have the time or you want a professional job doing then you could hire a cleaner to do this for you. They will come to your home and clean it from top to bottom, making it sparkle like never before.

Sort The Garden

As well as sorting the interior, you will want to head outside and do that as well. Your garden should match your home interior in terms of making it look warm, welcoming, and appealing. You should ensure you are welcoming people into your home when you have cut the grass short and removed all the visible weeds. You can also help by placing some good quality lighting and adding some colourful plants around the borders. If you have a front garden then this will be the first thing people see when they approach your property so you will want it to look as nice as possible.

Book Removals

As soon as you have a moving date, you should book any removal companies you plan on using to help with the move. Of course, there is no pressure to use a removal company. You may choose to do it all yourself, perhaps asking friends or family to help as well. If you do choose to use a removal company then you will need to do this as soon as possible. They get pretty booked up, especially in the summertime. You have a few options when it comes to removal companies. You can choose them:

  • To pack your stuff up and drive it to your new home
  • To pack up your belongings, drive them to your new place, and then unpack
  • Or just simply drive your already packed boxes and drop them off at your new home

When you choose a removal company make sure you have checked reviews or based it on recommendations from friends and family members. You should also make sure that they have the right level of insurance and protection for your belongings.

Find Somewhere Else

Something else to sort out is where you are going to be living when you sell your current property. You may already have somewhere in mind, however, if not then you will need to find somewhere. You may choose to rent for a bit until you find somewhere suitable or you might be looking to buy another property. If this is the case then as mentioned above, your estate agent can help you find the perfect place. It is important not to rush this process otherwise you could end up living somewhere just for the sake of it.

If you write down your preferences and hand them to your estate agent then they will only show you properties that match these wants and needs. It can take some time to sell your current property so you need to be prepared for a bit of a wait. The key here is to know where you want to move to, you should take some time to look at different areas and pick the one you want to live in.

Don’t Leave It Until Last Minute

One thing to remember and try to stick to is not doing everything last minute. You can do this if you wish, however, leaving things till the last minute could result in you forgetting something. It is similar to packing up to go on holiday, if you are doing it in a rush you are more likely to forget something vital. This is where your lists will come in handy, tick off everything as and when you do it. This also prevents you from leaving everything as you will see how long the list is and avoid that happening.

Change The Locks

Finally, once you arrive at your new place it is essential you contact a locksmith to change the locks. You don’t want any unwanted visitors that have kept a set of keys, this can and has happened before. A good locksmith will have a bundle deal where they can change your window and door locks for a set price.
