Supporting Your Child with their Critical Thinking Skills

Your child will have to make difficult decisions in life, whether that be in relation to their
friendships, finances, or career. It requires the skill to think critically and weigh up any pros
and cons. They will also need to be able to look ahead and think about the consequences of
their actions. While they may not be able to yet, it’s something that they will surely be
capable of with your help. Giving them the opportunity to make their own decisions is one
way in which you can help them with this. Here are some more from an independent school
in Kent.

Encourage Questioning
The way that we’re able to learn whether a decision is the right one to make is by carrying
out research and asking questions. There’s no such thing as a silly question and is
something that you should encourage your child to do.

Hypotheses
Forward thinking is also essential as it allows you to not only make decisions that are right
for the time being but also the future and without any compromise too. This is something that
you can practise with them by asking them to develop their own theories as to what they
think will happen in play or when watching TV.

Perspectives
To help your child with their critical thinking, you can also encourage them to consider
different perspectives as this will allow them to think carefully before making any such
decisions. When dealing with challenges or faced with different options to choose from, you
can nudge them in the right direction by presenting hints and ideas on what they should
consider.

These are just a handful of ways in which you can work on critical thinking with your child.
They offer a starting point and there are definitely more that you can explore like play
activities and creativity. We hope that this post was helpful. For more like this, check out my
