How to Encourage Your Child to Be Physically Active

Physical activities on a regular basis are really beneficial at all ages in our lives, but encouraging children to see the benefits can be a challenge at times. Here are some ways you can get your child to feel motivated about taking part in regular exercise, be it through sports or in a different way.

Try activities that your child genuinely enjoys

This can be a lot harder to think about if your child isn’t showing any interest in exercising, but it can be made easier through the activities your child does take an interest in already. For example, children invested in art will mean that your child could enjoy more visual games, like hopscotch or tennis as you can see where the target is and how it can be made more enjoyable.

Start with smaller activities first

It’s tempting to go all out with your exercise, but children won’t know what to do in these situations. It’s actually better to incorporate a small amount of exercise into your child’s routine to see how they get on, and make it really rewarding to get your child into the swing of enjoying themselves. Exercise can feel like it’s never fun or engaging for young children, but if they get into the rhythm they will find that it can be a much more enjoyable experience.

Bring some of their friends along for the ride

If children learn together it can be a lot more exciting. Your child is more likely to follow their friends, and even you to an extent, so bring them all in on the fun and make it a more rewarding time for everyone. It can even be a game of tag, a treasure hunt made in the garden or something else that raises their endorphins.

Look what is on offer at your child’s school

All schools will have the facilities for your child to try out lots of different activities. It means that your child can have a go at all sorts of activities and exercises, and it will be a critical part of their school curriculum as well. This Junior School in Somerset makes time for children to try all sorts of activities out with their students to bring them closer together and to develop transferable skills.
