Experts say that we all have a preferred way of learning and remembering information, which is called our ‘learning style’. There are lots of different learning styles, but three that stand out; auditory, visual, and kinaesthetic. It’s important for parents to figure out their child’s learning style so that they can be more supportive when it comes to home learning and providing the appropriate tools. A boys’ school near Hertfordshire have put together the following information to help parents understand a little bit more about each of the three main learning styles.
Auditory Learners
As the name suggests, auditory learners are better at absorbing information through sound. In other words, they will be more likely to understand something and remember it if it has been verbally explained to them rather than read from a book. The same applies when giving them instructions; it’s better to tell them rather than write down a list of bullet points. If your child is an auditory learner, you might notice them reading aloud whilst studying and they may be drawn to audiobooks and podcasts.
Visual Learners
Visual learners like to use colours, diagrams, graphs, and other visual cues to help with their learning. With that said, if you think your child is a visual learner, make sure they have lots of highlighters and coloured pens/paper that they can use when studying.
Kinaesthetic Learners
If your child prefers hands-on activities over reading and writing, they may be a kinaesthetic learner. These types of learners are typically drawn to more practical subjects, like PE, Science, Drama, and Art, because they get to move around and touch/feel things as they learn.
Keep an eye on your child when they’re doing their homework so that you can try and figure out what type of learner they might be. This will put you in a better position when it comes to helping them going forward; you will know the best way to explain something to them and what activities they might enjoy doing in their free time.
