My Open University story started many years ago when I worked in a solicitors in the conveyancing department I decided that I would like to study law. Fast forward a few years including a marriage breakup meant that I could no longer study this as I had a family to look after and no funds to continue.
Around two years ago I decided to pick up my law studies again and I completed The first year of law with the Open University. I then decided because of my age it would become very difficult to continue and finish my studies in law and to become a solicitor with a training contract. I then decided to do a business management course which I am completing at the moment and I finish in September.
Once again though this course did not feel right for me as I have a love of literature and books and I am really excited to be starting the English literature and language studies in September this year.
My degree path has changed as you can see several times but one thing is for sure and that is that I have never thought about giving up.
Instead of a degree in law or business management or even English literature I have decided with the Open University to gain an open degree BA honours so I can use all of my studies I’ve done so far to go towards my qualification.
One of the reasons I wanted to write this blog post was to show that even though your plans can change over time and your path your career path my change to the Open University especially will always be there to try and guide you and help you as much as they possibly can.
Growing up I went to school and college never even entered my mind to go and do a degree at University. Looking back now I wish I had as you get older I also just get harder to learn and retain things but I am determined to finish my degree and finally get the graduation that I wanted for all of these years.
No matter what life has thrown at me I have always tried to continue to learn or start a business or try and grow some way in myself I think that’s important especially when you are bringing up a family especially on your own to have these other things that you do just for yourself.
I also would love that my family could be inspired and would look at what I’ve done and be proud of me. So if you are an older person thinking about studying I say go for it doesn’t matter what your age do something that interest you because you will not enjoy it if you are doing assignments on things that you really are not interested in at all. There will be of course hard times and you will have to spend a lot of hours working out some of the assignments of the module work but with the Open University especially they have tutors on hand that can help you and tutor group forums with students and even WhatsApp groups for your courses and Facebook groups that hopefully can give you a little bit more encouragement as you go along the way.
I can honestly say without distance learning and the other university then I would never be studying again and for that I am really grateful to have this opportunity.
I still have four more modules to complete before I get my degree but I will do it. Keep checking the blog and I will update you all.
