I love knitting socks! I usually make them as gifts so I don’t have an array of hand knitted socks for myself. This last pair I made though I decided we’re definitely going to be for me. I bought the yarn a long time ago in a destash. So you might be asking yourself if you aren’t a knitter why make socks when you can just buy them? There are so many reasons why I have made a list to show you.

They are a small project that don’t take that long to make.

Knitted in the round so no seams, so you just knit round and round so perfect tv knitting.

When they are made right they are so comfortable to wear.

They are quite a quick project to knit on.

They are great for learning new skills. You can learn new stitches and techniques knitting socks. If you make a mistake its not like on a larger project and you have to pull out a big section to rectify it.

Toes and heels arent the only thing you can learn while knitting socks. You can practice cables and lace too.

They are easier to design than other bigger projects. You can use different graphics to make the knitting pattern more attractive such as moon svg or monogram svg amongst lots of others to choose from.

Once you learn how to knit socks you can keep some in your knitting bag at all times and they are great if you are travelling or you want something portable on the go. They are also a great project to keep when you have a waiting time, like at the doctors or dentists or on a long drive as long as you arent the one driving!

You can adjust the size to fit yourself or whoever you are knitting them for perfectly.

They usually only take a skein of yarn sometimes less if the person has small feet! So it can be quite inexpensive compared to other garments you can knit.

There are different types of yarn you can use for knitting socks. These can be bamboo, wool, cashmere, acrylic yarn and more.

The best reason of they feel amazing and you know you have made them yourself! The sense of really achieving something and being proud of it is one of the best things about knitting I find.

Anyway back to the rainbow socks. I made these using 2.25mm circular needles then put in an afterthought heel. Which does mean cutting your knitting to insert a heel! But with practice this is easy and not as terrifying as it sounds. I use this method quite a lot although I enjoy making them with a traditional heel flap and gusset too.  

 I had a little bit of yarn left so I made a pair of super cute baby socks for my granddaughter so she can have rainbow socks too.  Left over sock yarn is also great for making blankets such as the cozy memories blanket that you make a square out of each piece of leftover sock yarn that you acquire. These are great heirlooms that I can imagine will be passed down from generation to generation.
