Healthy Lunch Box Ideas For Kids

When taking care of your children one of the most important things to do is ensure they are eating nutritiously throughout the week. In order for your kids to grow up big and strong, they need the right food to fuel their bodies and today we are here to share some great ideas with you. 

Here are some super simple lunch ideas for your child whether you are homeschooling them, sending them to state school, or to private senior school. These foods are super simple and will keep your kids strong and ready to learn. 

Easy pesto pasta 

Pesto pasta is a great option for kids because it is flavorful but also comforting. Making your own pesto only takes a few minutes and it will add a freshness to this easy dish. 

Ingredients: 

  • 400g pasta, any shape 
  • 1 punnet cherry tomatoes 
  • 1 large bunch pesto 
  • 2 cloves garlic 
  • Juice of 1 lemon 
  • 2 tbsp olive oil 
  • 2 tbsp Parmesan, plus extra for serving 
  • 3 tbsp pine nuts 
  1. Add the basil, garlic, lemon, olive oil, Parmesan, and pine nuts to a blender and blend until smooth. For an extra nutritious kick here, you can add a handful of spinach. 
  2. Cook your pasta according to packet instructions. 
  3. Slice your cherry tomatoes in half. 
  4. Mix all of your ingredients together and split into 4-5 portions. Top with some Parmesan. 

Turkey and cheddar wraps

Turkey and cheddar wraps might not be the most healthy meal, but for fussy kids this is a great option and will fill them up for the afternoon. 

Ingredients: 

  • Tortilla wraps 
  • Turkey slices 
  • Cheddar slices 
  • Ketchup
  • Spinach, optional
  1. Spread a small amount of ketchup onto a wrap. 
  2. Add some Turkey slices 
  3. Add some cheese slices 
  4. Add a handful of spinach or a different lettuce depending on what your kids will eat. 
  5. Wrap up and cut in half. 

Houmous and veggie sticks 

There is nothing easier for a lunchtime snack than some veggie sticks and Houmous. You can make your own Houmous at home and this will be an easy option for a healthy lunch. 

Ingredients: 

  • 1 can chickpeas, drained 
  • Salt and pepper 
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 clove garlic 
  • 1 tbsp tahini 
  • Juice of 1 lemon 
  • 1 roasted pepper, optional 
  • Veggie sticks – carrot, celery, cucumber 
  1. To make a simple Houmous, add all of your ingredients into a blender and blender until smooth and thick. Taste for seasoning and add more tahini for a nuttier flavour. 
  2. Add into a dip tub with some veggie sticks and portion for 2-3 days. 

Guacamole and tortilla chips 

Another simple and healthy snack for your kids at school is guacamole and tortilla chips. Here we make both from scratch and save a lot of additives and fat. 

Ingredients; 

  • 1 large avocado 
  • Juice of 1 lime 
  • 1 tsp salt 
  • 1 small bunch coriander 
  • 4-5 jalapeño slices, optional 
  • 2 mini Tortilla wraps 
  • Olive oil
  • 1 tsp paprika 
  • 1 tsp garlic salt 
  1. Mash your avocado until smooth. Add in the lime juice, chopped coriander, and salt. Mix well. 
  2. You can add some finely chopped jalapeños here if your child can handle some spice. 
  3. For the tortilla chips – preheat the oven to 180C. 
  4. Cut your tortillas into 8, like a pizza. You’ll end up with 16 chips. Brush with olive oil and add your paprika and garlic salt. 
  5. Bake for 5-8 minutes until crispy. 
  6. Pack into a Tupperware for a midday snack.
