Use this house moving checklist to help remove some of the stress of moving home.

Choose your moving date

This will depend on a lot of factors such as sale or purchase of your home, but try and avoid bank holidays, Fridays or school term time.

4 weeks before the moving day

Organise your removals

• Get quotes from removals companies such as The Man Van, who are a London moving service, they are reliable, efficient and offer stress free moves.
• Find out what is included in the fee and look at what extras are on offer, such as packing materials and insurance with the house moving service.
• Check the house remover’s contract and your home insurance so you know what to do if your furniture gets damaged during the removal.
• Make an inventory of everything included in the move and provide your removals company with a copy.

Start packing up your house

• Put items into piles of keep, charity and tip.
• Pack only the items that you will not need to use before the move.
• Make sure you label every box with what it contains.

Utilities

• Make a list of all the utilities companies you will need to inform of your house move.

Mail

• Have your mail redirected by contacting the Post Office, though this will incur a fee.

1 week before the move

• Arrange final readings of water, gas and electricity meters.
• Request final bills for telephone, broadband and anything else you have.
• Let people know your change of address, including your bank, employer etc.

On the day

• Take final meter readings.
• If you have children and pets make sure they are safe and looked after. Let the children pick a favourite toy to keep with them.
• Make sure any children or pets are safe and contented with their favourite toys, for instance.
• Have a final check around the property and check you haven’t forgotten anything.
• Pack a kit which could contain, kettle, tea and coffee making supplies, mugs, toilet rolls, washing up liquid, important documents, bed linen and anything else you wish to add!

Once you have moved into your new home

• Unpack your kit and any other essential items.
• Put boxes in the right rooms, this is where the labels are so handy.
• Make sure utilities are connected such as telephone and broadband.
• Clean if needed.
• Put up curtains and blinds and make the beds ready for a good nights sleep
• Grab a take away instead of cooking for that first night in your new home!
