It’s fantastic to have access to a garden but, sadly, they are often underused spaces. Sometimes that’s because of unsuitable weather but it can also be because it’s just not practical. It can be particularly difficult to make good use of your garden when it feels like there’s no flow between indoors and outdoors. When it feels like your garden is a totally separate space to the rest of your home, you can almost forget about it. If you want to change this, there are ways to open up your home into the garden and make it feel like one coherent space.
Create a Flow of Style
Using similar styles both inside and outside is one of the ways you can start making your garden and the inside of your home feel one and the same. Of course, you can’t treat them exactly the same because they are two different spaces by their very nature. But that shouldn’t stop you using the same design elements and themes across them. For example, if you’re a fan of maximalism inside your home, why not take that outside too? Even just choosing some little motifs that can feature in both spaces could start bringing them together.

Install the Right Doors
Think carefully about the threshold between indoors and outdoors. It can make a big difference if you want to join the two spaces. Your choice of doors is one of the things you can consider. Glass doors that open up into the garden, such as bifold doors or French doors, are a great option. These types of doors can be tricky though, so make sure you have a service like Bifold Doctor on hand in case of any problems. If you need any repairs, it’s best to have someone familiar with this type of door to fix it for you.
Set Up Outdoor Living
Gardens can be used in so many different ways. They’re a space for the kids and pets to run about, and they can be fun for barbecues and garden parties. Setting up an outdoor living space is a good way to make use of them, especially during the spring, summer and even autumn when the weather is agreeable. Outdoor living spaces can include seating, dining areas, firepits and even somewhere to cook. You can also enhance them with shade and coverings, various accessories, and even outdoor heaters to make them warm in the winter.
Bring the Outside In
As well as creating outdoor living spaces, you can do the opposite and bring parts of the outdoors inside. One of the main ways to do this is obviously by bringing plants indoors. You can try to match the aesthetic of your indoor plants to those you have outdoors so that it creates more of a flow. Try to look for other ways you might bring some of the outdoors inside, such as using natural materials in both spaces.
Open up your home into your garden and you could create a more cohesive space that you can use more often.
