How to Raise an Environmentally Conscious Child

As we know the planet has been long under the threat of climate change and global warming. Over the past few years, we’ve seen the greatest surge in sea levels and carbon dioxide. There’s a need to act now and no matter how big or small, our efforts can help to slow down the effects of climate change. Education on this topic is key and it is something that you can teach your children about. Below we share some tips to help you in raising an environmentally conscious child.

Explaining the Importance of Climate Change

To get them to care about the cause you can explain it to them. Climate change isn’t anything new. The planet has been warming and cooling since the dawn of time and like with each cycle, it presents dangers to all species (including us humans). This one unlike the rest however has been brought on by humans. Since the industrial revolution carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have grown astronomically and it’s all as a result of us burning fossil fuels. It’s these gases that create a blanket around the earth, resulting in an overall warming effect which is melting ice caps and creating floods. While older children may be able to get their head around this, you may need to take a simpler approach to explaining how climate change works to younger children.

Upcycle

Part of the problem is waste. We repurchase products as opposed to mending them. There’s lots of use left in everyday household items like empty bottles which can be used as watering cans, spray bottles and even be recycled to be used again.

Walk More

Walking more can help to limit the amount of carbon dioxide and harmful gases we emit into the atmosphere. It’s also better for our health and can help get children active.
