While all schools, and more so in independent schools, will provide a range of activities for
kids to try out away from the screen, there’s also a bunch of activities to try out at home.

- Painting
Getting the paint and brushes out will help your child learn to unwind. They can make
whatever they think of at the time and it can give them the chance to make a range of quirky
creations. You could also fill out paint into a bowl and ask your child to dip their hands in to
make prints. - Crochet
Something that’s soothing yet productive and exciting is crochet. Your child is able to pick
this up really easily by following just a few simple steps. It’ll also help your child to learn
about taking an hour or two making something fun – like a scarf or a cuddly toy. - Cycling
Heading outdoors is going to be a popular choice for children. Get on your bikes and head
out for a long cycle one afternoon to blow away the cobwebs and give yourself a chance to
enjoy the outside world. - Playing board games
As there are so many board games out there to explore and try out, it’s a great time to sit
down and test a child’s skills in other ways. Have a range of board games to see which ones
your child prefers and the ones they have the most fun playing. These are great on rainy
days that get your child well away from their tablet or PC. - Picking up a new sport
There’s always an opportunity to try out different sports and activities. Why not use these
times to get away from screens to explore new hobbies? While your child is probably going
to play football in their lifetime they might not have tried tennis, hockey or rugby. Ask your
child what sports they’d like to play and see which ones they take a shine to.
