Play time is important for children in their development as it improves their cognitive, physical, social, and emotional wellbeing. It’s fundamental to building fine motor skills and exploring their creativity. They can also learn about the world around them as they explore it using their senses.
Whilst you may have dozens of activities for your child like puzzles, sports equipment, and board games, it’s important to let your child explore them at their own pace. This will allow for a much more fun and engaging learning experience which is referred to as “unstructured play”. It involves letting them do what interests them. That might be a game of dress up or stacking all of their toys without any clear goal or plan.

The Benefits of Unstructured Play for Children
- Self-Identity
As children are put in the driver’s seat and decide on what they want to do, they can explore their interests and learn about themselves. This can help them in developing their own identity and fast track the process of finding what they are good at and enjoy.
Self Esteem
- This can have a ripple effect and help build their confidence and self-esteem as they find things that they are good at.
Creative Thinking Skills
- Also, as there aren’t any set guidelines, it can help children to think freely and create their own ideas. This can help them to practise and strengthen their creative thinking skills.
Decision Making
- It teaches children to think for themselves and make their own decisions as they are the ones calling the shots.
Physical Strength
- Unstructured play gives children the freedom to do whatever they like. They can throw around their toys, stack them and pretty much anything without any rhyme or rhythm. This can help with developing their gross motor skills and strengthen the larger muscles of their body which they will need day to day.
